1940 Census

We've come a long way since the 1940 Census, when the average life expectancy in America was 65.2 for women and 60.8 for men.

Let's take an an up-to-date look at the average life expectancy of the average person living in America today. Below is a list of all 50 states, ranked in order of the average life span for residents of that state.

But before you pack up and move to Hawaii (or out of Mississippi, or even out of the country after viewing the International chart), be aware that these are only numbers. They represent a very broad average of the population.

Variations in life expectancy by state may be due to any of a number of factors, like diet, crime rates and health care, for instance. All of these factors are a function of income. Regardless, any individual can beat the odds.

It's also worth noting that Washington D.C, if it were a state, would finish 43rd on this list.

Most shocking about DC's average life expectancy is that African Americans have (by far!) the nation's lowest average life expectancy for blacks (71.6), and Caucasians have (by far!) the nation's highest average life expectancy for whites (84.3).
