Shown here is a basic city map of New Hampshire, which is located in America's northeastern New England region.
New Hampshire's boundaries include Quebec to the north and northwest, Maine and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Massachusetts to the south, and Vermont to the west. New Hampshire has the shortest ocean coastline of any U.S. state, measuring only 18 miles.
New Hampshire's major regions are the Great North Woods, the White Mountains, the Lakes Region, the Seacoast, the Merrimack Valley, the Monadnock Region, and the Dartmouth-Lake Sunapee area.
The majestic White Mountains range spans the north-central portion of the state, and within this range is Mount Washington, the tallest mountain in the northeast. The upper reaches of Mount Washington claim the title of having the "worst weather on earth."
New Hampshire's major rivers include the Merrimack River and the Connecticut River, which defines the state's western border with Vermont. The state's largest lake is Lake Winnipesaukee, which covers 72 square miles. Most of New Hampshire's terrain is sparsely populated and covered with dense forests.
