CITY OF PORTLAND OREGON AND ASHLAND





Situated roughly 227 miles south of the city of Portland Oregon is the charming town of Ashland. It is is located only about fifteen miles north of the California border. Shown here is a photo of the downtown area in the city of Ashland, Oregon.

Ashland has a year-round population of about 22,000 people, and is the home of Southern Oregon University. Being a University town, Ashland has many book stores, libraries and coffee houses.

Public transportation is readily available on weekdays via the Rogue Valley Transportation District, which provides bus service in and around town. Ashland is very easily accessible from Portland.

The cityscape is rich with restored Victorian architecture and preserved buildings from the old pioneer days.

Ashland also hosts the Annual Oregon Shakespeare Festival, which attracts more than 100,000 visitors each year. Other annual events include the Ashland Independent Film Festival, held every April, and a very popular food festival called A Taste of Ashland. Local nightlife activities include comedy clubs, dance halls and experimental theater.

For winter travelers, Ashland offers 23 ski slopes and eighty miles of snowy cross-country trails for skiing, sledding, snow boarding and snowmobile rides.

Long ago occupied by Shasta Indians, Ashland today is a bustling commercial center with many interesting shops and various ethnic restaurants, galleries and libraries. Also of interest are the historically preserved Lithia Park and the Science Works Hands-On Museum, which features more than eighty very cool interactive science exhibits.

The city also conducts guided tours of local wineries.
