Actually, Washington DC is not in a state, and is not itself a state. It is also nowhere near the state of Washington, which is thousands of miles northwest of there.

Washington DC is a district (specifically, the District of Columbia), and is located in the mid-Atlantic region of the United States, at the confluence of the Potomac and Anacostia rivers. It is bordered on the north, east, and southeast by Maryland and on the southwest by Virginia.

The U.S. Constitution allows for the creation of a special district to serve as the permanent national capital. This is why Washington DC is not considered a part of any U.S. state.

Washington DC was originally created from land ceded by the states of Virginia and Maryland. In 1871, the cities of Washington and Georgetown were consolidated with Washington County to become known as Washington DC, making the city, the county, and the federal district one and the same.

The city of Washington DC has a total land area of about 61 square miles. It is a popular tourist destination due to its great historical and political content. Points of interest include the White House, the Washington Monument and the Smithsonian Museum.

With a population of more than five-and-a-half million, Washington DC is the seventh largest metropolitan area in America.
