Below is a detailed state of Maine map showing cities, towns and major roadways.
Maine is the largest state in New England. Located in the extreme northeastern United States, it's the only state in America that is bordered by just one other state (New Hampshire to the west). The rest of Maine is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Canada (Quebec and New Brunswick).
Maine is the most sparsely populated state east of the Mississippi River. One area in the northern part of the state spans 2,668-square-miles, with a population of just 27 residents, or one person for every 100 square miles.
Maine is well known for its dramatic rocky coastline and tiny offshore islands, peppered here and there with quaint, historic lighthouses. Geologists describe this type of landscape as a drowned coast, where a rising sea level has invaded former land features, creating bays out of valleys and islands out of mountain tops.
But most of the state's land area consists of the sparsely populated, thickly forested hills that inspired Maine's official nickname - The Pine Tree State.
