FUN PRESIDENTIAL FACTS AND VIRGINIA

Here are some fun presidential facts and other important historical and demographic facts about the state of Virginia.

The history of America is closely tied to Virginia, especially during Colonial times. Jamestown, founded in 1607, was the first permanent English settlement in North America and slavery was first introduced there in 1619.

The American Revolution and the Civil War both ended in Virginia, at Yorktown and Appomattox, respectively.

Virginia is called the "Mother of Presidents" because eight U.S. presidents were born there. They are George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.

Other famous historical figures from Virginia include Patrick Henry, Sam Houston and Robert E. Lee.

The state is divided into five geological regions from east to west: The Tidewater (a coastal plain), Piedmont, Blue Ridge Mountains, Ridge & Valley and Cumberland Plateau.

Roughly 65 percent of the state of Virginia is covered in forests.

The largest cities in Virginia are Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Chesapeake, Richmond, Arlington, Newport News, Hampton, Alexandria, Portsmouth and Roanoke.

Strange-but-popular Virginia events and tourist attractions include the Drug Enforcement Administration Museum in Arlington, the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum and the Annual Assateague-to-Chincoteague Wild Pony Swim.
