1965, the BBC pretended to conduct a trial of a new technology allowing the transmission of odor over the airwaves to all viewers. They called it Smell-o-Vision. Many viewers contacted the BBC to report the trial's success.

In 1996, Taco Bell took out a full-page ad in The New York Times announcing that they had purchased the Liberty Bell and renamed it the "Taco Liberty Bell". When asked about the sale, a White House press secretary replied that the Lincoln Memorial had also been sold and would henceforth be known as the Lincoln Mercury Memorial.

In 1998, a radio Deejay pretending to be the British Prime Minister Tony Blair called South African President Nelson Mandela for a chat. It was only at the end of the call when the deejay asked Nelson what he was doing for April Fools' Day that the line went dead.

In 2004, NationStates ran a hoax in which they claimed that there was a population bug, and that all nations' populations would be reset to 5 million people.

The 2008, Microsoft claimed that their Research had determined the value of pi to be "exactly 3.141999, or as expressed in company literature, 'Three easy payments of 1.047333.'"

Go to the Word program on someone's computer, and set the auto-correct function so that it changes a common word to another, much less appropriate word. 


First, have your kids help you plant carrot seeds. Later that evening, buy carrots at the market, and secretly plant the full grown carrots where the seeds had been. Watch the kids' reactions in the morning. Have your camera ready.


Have your mom (or "doctor") call in with a preposterous excuse for you to leave school (or work). Let your imagination run wild!


Tell everyone in your office that a particular person wants to meet with them in his/her office at 10 AM sharp. Get yourself a Starbucks while they figure it out.


Write a professional-looking email announcing that the web will be closed for Spring cleaning, and will re-open some time in May. Send it to everyone.
