St. Patrick's Day, usually celebrated on March 17, is an annual holiday that celebrates the life of Saint Patrick, a patron saint of Ireland, who lived and died more than 1500 years ago.
The first St. Patrick's Day parade took place in Boston in 1761. New York City's celebration began the following year, when Irish soldiers in the English military marched through the city streets and played traditional Irish music. New York City's St. Paddy's Day parade is the largest in the nation, featuring about two million spectators and over 150,000 people marching.
The day is celebrated throughout the United States, but is not an official U.S. holiday. Americans acknowledge this day with street parades, Irish music, and a liberal use of the color green.
St. Patrick's day symbols include leprechauns, shamrocks, and just about anything that's green.
Shown to your right is the Chicago River, dyed green for the occasion.
