MAP OF CALIFORNIA

Shown here is a full state map of California, which is located on the Pacific coast of North America. With a land area of about 160,000 square miles, it is the 3rd largest state in the nation. Beyond it's borders are Oregon to the north, Nevada and Arizona on the east, and Mexico (Baja California) to the south.

California, which has 58 counties, is home to more people than any other state in America. Its largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. All are located along the state's coastal regions.

California's land is characterized by beaches in the west, mountains to the east and the agriculturally rich Central Valley in between.

Almost half the entire land area of the state of California is covered by forests. The world's tallest trees are the giant Sequoia Redwoods found only in and around Eureka. California also contains the world's oldest trees, located in the White Mountains.

One particular Bristle Cone Pine is estimated to be nearly five thousand years old!

The Indigenous peoples of California included more than seventy distinct Indian tribes, each with its own laws and customs. Among these tribes many different languages were spoken.

In 1848 the non-native population of California was estimated at 15,000. However, the population exploded with white Americans and Europeans during the great California Gold Rush. Within five years the non-native population of California had grown to more than 300,000.

California's top rated tourist attractions (outside of its biggest cities) are:
