New York State is located in the Northeastern region of the United States.

In population, New York is the nation's third largest state.

New York is bordered by New Jersey and Pennsylvania to the south, by Connecticut, Massachusetts and Vermont to the east, and by parts of Canada to the north.

New York is often referred to as New York State to distinguish it from New York City.

The original inhabitants of what is now New York were the Algonquin, the Iroquois and the Lenape tribes. They inhabited the area for many centuries before Dutch settlers arrived around 1600.

New York harbor was visited by Giovanni Verrazano in 1524. The first European exploration of the Hudson River was by Henry Hudson in 1609.

The ten largest cities in New York state are New York City, Buffalo, Rochester, Yonkers, Syracuse, Albany, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Schenectady and Utica.

Some of the state's most interesting tourist attractions are Niagara Falls, Cornell University in Ithaca, the tiny town of Lily Dale (a Spiritualist community), and of course everything in New York City.

America's first pizzeria was opened in New York City.

The first chess tournament in America took place in New York in 1843.

New York City has more than 700 miles of subway track.

America's first railroad ran eleven miles between Albany and Schenectady.

The state of New York has 62 counties.
