North Carolina is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, South Carolina to the south, Georgia to the southwest, Tennessee to the west, and Virginia to the north.

North Carolina is home to more than nine million people. The state's ten largest cities are Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, Durham, Winston-Salem, Fayetteville, Cary, High Point, Wilmington and Asheville.

North Carolina's landscape is loaded with natural beauty, and the state has many scenic attractions. These include 34 State Parks, 14 National Parks, many miles of beaches, and several lovely offshore islands such as Ocrakoke and Hatteras.

Some of the states most interesting tourist attractions are the Waynesborough Historical Village in Goldsboro and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

FUN FACTS ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA:

The Biltmore Estate in Ashville is America's largest home. It features a 255-room chateau and an award-winning winery on a sprawling plot of land with luxuriously landscaped gardens.

In 1903 the Wright Brothers made the first successful powered flight by man at Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk.

North Carolina is the nation's largest producer of sweet potatoes.

The first English child born in America was Virginia Dare (1587-?) from Walter Raleigh's "Lost Colony" of Roanoke, in what is now North Carolina.

Famous North Carolina natives include Ava Gardner, Andy Griffith, O. Henry, Andrew Jackson, Michael Jordan, Arnold Palmer and the Wright Brothers.
