According to the U.S. Census Bureau, America's population reached 300 million in October of 2006.
About 66% of current U.S. residents identify themselves as white or Caucasian. Roughly 14% are Hispanic. About 12% are black or African American. Almost 5% are Asian. Only about 1.5% are Native American (including Alaska Natives), and only one-third of one percent are Native Hawaiian (a.k.a. Pacific Islanders).
The state of New Jersey has the nation's highest population density, with well over 1100 people per square mile. The most sparsely populated state is Alaska, which averages about one person per square mile.
