MICHAELS CRAFT STORES AND MORE

EMERYVILLE, CALIFORNIA

Emeryville packs a lot of shopping into one-and-a-quarter square miles of real estate.

Michaels Craft Stores, Game Stops and many other franchises big and small can be found throughout the city's five major commercial districts.

All of Emeryville's major shopping areas are conveniently served by a free shuttle called the Emery-Go-Round bus line.

The city also features many restaurants and several movie theatres. Other points of interest include the Oaks Card Club, the Broken Rack Billiard Hall and a dance club called the Allegro Ballroom.

Situated between Berkeley and Oakland, Emeryville is considered a convenient, cost-effective alternative to staying in San Francisco.

As of 2010, the city had a year-round population of about ten thousand.

Emeryville's ideal location is the primary reason for the economic growth of this town. It is the corporate home of Pixar Animation Studios and Jamba Juice, as well as quite a few major software and biotech companies.

**************************************************************

The area that is now Emeryville was once inhabited by Native American tribes who hunted and ate shellfish from the mud banks. The shells were all disposed of in a single place. This custom, over time, created a huge mound of shells that is now known as the Emeryville Shellmound.

In the late 19th century, a large park was built around the shellmound.

Emeryville was named after Joseph Stickney Emery, who during the Gold Rush acquired large tracts of land in what became known as "Emery's".

Emeryville's first post office opened in 1884.
