The State of Franklin was an autonomous United States territory created after the Revolutionary War, from land ceded by North Carolina to the federal government. The Franklin territory later become part of what is now known as north-eastern Tennessee. Franklin was never officially admitted to the Union as one of the United States. The territory existed for only four years, from 1784-1788. By 1790, the government of the State of Franklin had collapsed entirely and the territory was turned back over to North Carolina. Most people are surprised to learn that there once was a state called Franklin. But Tenessee remembers, and still has a Franklin County, a city named Franklin, and a street called State of Franklin Road, not to mention about a half dozen local businesses in Johnson County with "State of Franklin" in their names.
