Mother's Day is a day honoring mothers, and is observed in many countries around the world. Ancient cultures throughout history have celebrated holidays honoring motherhood. In bygone days, the mother figure was represented as a goddess.

The first official National Mothers Day in the United States was declared by President Woodrow Wilson in 1914. Within a decade, commercialization had taken hold. To this day, (according to the U.S. National Restaurant Association) Mother's Day is the most popular day of the year to eat at a restaurant.

In the United States, Mothers Day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May. The day is traditionally observed by doing something nice for mom, like taking her out to dinner, buying her something she likes, or sending her a card.
