STATE SALES TAX CHART
This page features a state-by-state sales tax chart, with each state's average sales tax rate (percentage of purchase price) as of January, 2012. This data was found on a US Tax Administration web page.
Sales tax is an extra percentage of the purhcase price of an item, collected from the buyer by the seller, then remitted by the seller to a designated government agency.
The state with the lowest cost of living is Oklahoma, followed closely by Arkansas and Texas. But sales taxes in these states are relatively high. Hawaii, on the other hand, has (by far) the highest cost of living, yet it's sales tax rate is rather low (4 %).
The states of Alaska, Delaware and Montana do not impose any state sales tax at all.
