and SUMMARY OF MEMPHIS TENNESSEE

song lyrics phrase search

The pyramid is a dead giveaway. Shown here is a photo of the city of Memphis Tennessee.

Memphis is the largest city in the state of Tennessee, and the 19th largest city in the United States.

Memphis was founded in 1819 by John Overton, James Winchester and Andrew Jackson.

The city was named after the ancient capital of Egypt on the Nile River.

Memphis developed as a transportation center in the 19th century, because its location high above the Mississippi River kept it relatively safe from floods.

The area now known as Tennessee was first settled by the Mississippian Culture and then by the Chickasaw Indian tribe, who occupied the bluffs along the river for ten thousand years before European settlers arrived.

Popular Memphis tourist attractions are the Brooks Museum of Art, the Children's Museum of Memphis, the Graceland Mansion (former home of Elvis) and the Chucalissa Indian Village.

Other points of interest are the Memphis Zoo, the Pyramid Arena and the Beale Street musicians.

Memphis is the home of numerous American music genres like Blues, Gospel, Rock & Roll, Buck, Crunk, and especially "sharecropper" country music (as opposed to the "rhinestone" country sound of Nashville).

Famous musicians who got their start in Memphis are Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Isaac Hayes and B. B. King.
