STATE ABBREVIATIONS: Just about anyone can learn the official two-letter postal abbreviation for each U.S. state. All it takes is a little practice. It's just one of those things you eventually commit to memory. Here's a list of official, two-letter postal codes for each state, along with this colorful map of states and their abbreviated forms, for those who are more visually inclined. The United States Postal Service has been accepting and using common state abbreviations since 1874. The modern two-letter abbreviated codes for U.S. states began in 1963, the year the United States Post Office introduced the system of ZIP codes. The purpose of abbreviating states was specifically to make room for the ZIP codes in the addresses written on cards and envelopes of limited size. The state of Nebraska was originally abbreviated as NB, but was changed to NE in 1969, when mail meant for places like Lincoln and Omaha was repeatedly misdirected to New Brunswick (NB) Canada.
