A vacation beach house in Maine is a favorite destination for many travelers, largely because of sights like the one shown here, the Portland Head Light Station, located at 1000 Shore Road in Cape Elizabeth. Some call this the most photographed lighthouse in America.
Contracted by George Washington, Portland Head Station was originally built of rubblestone and brick in 1791. Back then, they burned whale oil to light the way for incoming sailors. The lighthouse became automated in 1989, and nowadays the Portland Head Light is a 200,000 candlepower, second-order electric light, visible for sixteen miles. The light stands 80 feet above the ground and 101 feet above water.
The lighthouse features a seasonal museum and gift shop, and is surrounded by Fort Williams Park. The pretty little town of Cape Elizabeth offers quaint and charming accomodations to suit many budgets. Other nearby attractions include Crescent Beach and Two Lights State Park.
