What is the largest state in America? It depends what you mean by that. Sometimes the question refers to land area in square miles. Other times it refers to state populations.
In terms of total land (and water) area, the largest state in the nation is Alaska, spanning 663,267 square miles. Alaska occupies the extreme northwestern region of North America. It's separated from Russia by the Bering Strait, and from the mainland USA by about 500 miles of Canadian territory.
Only 18 countries in the entire world are larger in square miles than the state of Alaska. Measured from west to east, Alaska spans the width of the entire mainland USA.
California has the largest population of any state, although it's only the 3rd largest state in land area, measuring 163,696 square miles.
And just for the record, the second largest state in America is Texas, in both population AND land area.
