What is the smallest state in America? In terms of land area, it's Rhode Island, which covers approximately 1,045 square miles, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Located in New England, Rhode Island has two distinct natural regions. Eastern Rhode Island contains the lowlands of the Narragansett Bay, while Western Rhode Island forms part of the New England Upland. Within the Narragansett Bay, there are over 30 islands, each of them considered part of the state. The largest of these is Aquidneck Island, shared by the municipalities of Newport, Middletown, and Portsmouth.

The state with the smallest number of people living in it is Wyoming, which has an estimated population of just over half a million, as of 2005.
