When did the American Revolution start, and in what state?
The American Revolution refers to the time frame in which the Thirteen Colonies that became the United States of America gained independence from the British Empire. The American Revolutionary War was fought between 1775 and 1783.
The first battle took place at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, in the area of what is now Massachusetts. This led to the development of an American declaration of independence in 1776, and the Colonies' eventual success on the battlefield in 1781.
The war's final battle saw the British trapped at Yorktown, Virginia, where they surrendered in October, 1781. King George III wanted to fight on, but his supporters had lost control of Parliament. So the war effectively ended, and the United States of America was born.
