WORLD EVENTS TIMELINE AND THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

Click below for a world events timeline.

The American Revolution refers to the time frame in which the Thirteen Colonies that became the United States of America gained independence from the British Empire.

The American Revolutionary War was fought between 1775 and 1783.

The first battle took place at Lexington Green on April 19, 1775, in the area of what is now Massachusetts.

This led to the development of an American declaration of independence in 1776, and the eventual success of the Colonies on the battlefield in 1781.

The war's final battle saw the British trapped at Yorktown Virginia, where they surrendered in October, 1781.

King George III had wanted to continue the fight, but his supporters had lost control of Parliament. So the war effectively ended, and the United States of America was born.

Famous people of the Revolutionary War include William Alexander, Benedict Arnold, Nathaniel Greene, Alexander Hamilton, Henry Lee III (father of Civil War General Robert E. Lee), Daniel Morgan and George Washington.

African Americans served on both sides during this war. The British recruited slaves belonging to Patriot masters and promised freedom to those who served.

Meanwhile, George Washington lifted the ban on black enlistment in the Continental Army.

All told, at least five thousand black soldiers fought for the Revolutionary cause.

At the end of the war, more than 3,000 freedmen were resettled in Nova Scotia, the Caribbean and Great Britain.

******************************************

Approximately thirteen thousand Native Americans fought on the British side, with the largest group (roughly 1,500 men) coming from the Iroquois tribes.

Many Indians of other tribes also fought this war, some siding with the Americans and others siding with the British.
